Shimmy and Strut! – Burlesque Mondays with Enshara
Have you ever wanted to dance like a Pussycat Doll, or shine like Dita Von Teese? Maybe you just want to get in touch with the more sensual side of yourself? Now you can release your inner showgirl with Burlesque Mondays, a five-week chance to discover the sexiness, sassiness, and fun of burlesque movement.
Burlesque as a form of dance was born in the early 1900s right at Coney Island. Belly dancers like Little Egypt who came to perform at the World Fairs and circuses taught and inspired American dancers to create the shimmy, the “hoochie coochie,” and the bump-and-grind. Performers use props like feather fans, boas, and gloves. Showgirls like Lili St. Cyr and Gypsy Rose Lee were superstars all through the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s, and neo-burlesque is a huge international movement, with its heart right here in NYC!
Come and learn both classic burlesque style, and fresh choreography just like the top burlesque stars of today! Classes feature a warm-up, burlesque movement technique, and a short choreography. Music includes both the standards of the Golden Age of Burlesque and modern pop songs. Come with easy-to-move clothing such as yoga pants, leggings, or skirts that allow complete freedom of movement. Heels are optional! Classes are sixteen and up, and for all levels, sizes, ages, and body sizes. Burlesque is a form of expression open to all women. Many of the most famous burlesque stars of today are plus size and over fifty.
In burlesque, it’s all about presence, confidence, and individuality. The core of burlesque is about connecting with your own power and sensuality and finding the fun in flaunting what you’ve got!
In addition to belly dance, Enshara is a professional burlesque dancer and choreographer who has created multiple shows and numbers featured at top NYC venues like Drom and The Slipper Room.
