How to Dance Swing

Swing dancing is one of the most loved dances throughout the world. It can be used in any type of setting including competition, or just for fun. Depending on the reasons for learning this dance, you may find that you can use it when learning other forms of dance, or just learn it so that you have a wide range of dances to choose from. Through the use of swing dancing, numerous professionals have gotten to the top of competitions, while also being able to conform to many different dance routines required for special events such as galas, weddings and balls. Learning how to dance swing is one of the most exciting experiences you might have.

Swing dancing together in dance

Are you ready to get started in the world of fast paced, exciting and deeply rooted dancing?

Learning how to swing dance can first be done with some basic steps. However, it is ideal that you watch someone do the moves so that you’re able to mimic them on your own. This can put you in a better position to know whether or not the moves you’re doing are right, or wrong. Also, working with a swing dance instructor can also better your chances for being able to successfully learn how to swing dance.

Keep in mind, practice makes perfect and even if you do not get the moves the first time around, you can keep trying and practicing until you have the dance down!

Step 1 - Make Sure That You Have Comfortable Clothes and Shoes On

Before you go out on the dance floor and start learning the dance, you want to make sure that you’re in something comfortable. Especially if you’re just learning. You want shoes that are able to easily flex and that are not going to give you sores if you’re in them dancing too long. This is also ideal if you’re going to be out all night dancing the night away. You want to be able to have a good time, and not worry about your feet. Put on a flowing skirt or dress, some comfortable shoes and guys can wear whatever they feel the most comfortable in.

Step 2 - Face Your Partner with One Hand on Their Hip and the Other in Her Hand

This is known as open position. You are both facing each other, and his hand is on her hip, hers is on his shoulder and you’re holding hands in an upward belt elbow position. This is how you’re going to be dancing, whether it is a slower or faster paced song. Depending on that, you will pick up your feet movements as you go along, or slow them down.

Remember - if you’re the guy in the couple then you want to make sure that you’re leading the lady during the dance, and she is not the one leading you!

Step 3 - Step Once, Then Hop Twice

You want to step in once, and then hop twice on the same foot with the other behind you. This can be tricky to explain, though if you watch someone that is dancing, you can find where the proper footing is being placed during the dance. Always make sure to watch the feet, but also to watch the body language of the dancers. This is what you’re going to want to imitate when you’re out on the dance floor with your partner.

Step 4 - Turn Out

After you’ve stepped once, and hopped twice, you can then change and move around. You can go to the left or the right, and then move again for the next repeat steps that you do. This is the basic terms for swing dancing. However, when you add more moves, you will have a bit more flexibility out of this standard box that you’re dancing in and you can get a bit more creative with your partner during the dance.

Step 5 - Repeat the Steps

Once you've done all of the steps, then it is time for you to repeat the steps over again. You want to make sure that you’re watching the footing that you do during the dance. You do not want to accidentally step on your partners toes. You also want to make sure that you’re doing the right number of steps, hops and turns throughout it. If you watch and pay attention to the instructor and the move that they make, then you should not have a problem being able to dance the swing dance wherever you are!

Through the use of these steps, you can start learning how to swing dance. You can feel good when you’re dancing to the music and listening to the beat. Make sure that you watch yourself while you learn, to find out which moves might need to be improved. You can also make sure to watch and listen to the instructor; because they are the ones that are going to show you what to do. If you’re not listening, then you might miss an important step of the dance.

Swing dancing is great fun once you get the hang of it, so don't give up and get out there and give it your all when you want to learn what it is all about!
